Brake Fluid: Types, Why It Matters, and Bleeding Basics

Brake fluid is the most ignored fluid in the car, yet it's what actually transmits your foot's pressure to the brakes at every wheel. When it degrades, stopping power fades at the worst possible moment. Understanding it and refreshing it on schedule is cheap safety.

Why Brake Fluid Goes Bad

Most brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Water in the fluid lowers its boiling point, and under hard braking the fluid can heat enough to boil, creating compressible gas bubbles. That's brake fade: a soft, sinking pedal and reduced stopping power. Moisture also corrodes expensive brake components from the inside.

Know Your Fluid Type

  • DOT 3 and DOT 4: the common glycol-based fluids; DOT 4 tolerates more heat.
  • DOT 5.1: a higher-performance glycol fluid, compatible with the others.
  • DOT 5: silicone-based and not interchangeable with the glycol types; never mix them.

Use the type printed on the reservoir cap, and never mix incompatible fluids.

Flush on Schedule

Many manufacturers recommend replacing brake fluid every two to three years regardless of mileage, precisely because it absorbs moisture with time, not just use. A flush is inexpensive and restores a firm pedal and full heat resistance. Dark, dirty fluid in the reservoir is a clear sign it's overdue.

Bleeding the Brakes

Bleeding removes old fluid and trapped air from the lines, usually working from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder to the nearest. It's a manageable DIY job with a helper or a one-person bleeder kit, but it demands care: keep the reservoir topped up so you don't introduce air, and never let it run dry. If you're unsure, a shop does it quickly. However you do it, fresh fluid and an air-free system give you the firm, reliable pedal that stops the car when it counts.
