A glowing symbol on the dash can mean anything from a loose gas cap to an engine about to seize. The color is your first clue to how worried you should be, and a few common lights are worth knowing on sight.
Color Is the First Signal
Generally, red means stop safely as soon as you can; something needs immediate attention. Yellow or amber means investigate soon but you can usually keep driving carefully. Green or blue is just informational, telling you a system like high beams or cruise control is active.
The Lights That Mean Stop
- Oil pressure (oil-can symbol): low pressure can destroy an engine in minutes; pull over and shut off.
- Temperature (thermometer): the engine is overheating; stop before it warps a head.
- Battery/charging: the charging system has failed and you're running on battery reserve.
- Brake warning: could be the parking brake, but it can also mean low fluid or a hydraulic fault.
The Lights That Mean Soon
The check-engine light covers hundreds of issues, from a loose gas cap to a failing sensor. If it's steady, get the code read; most parts stores do it free. If it's flashing, that signals a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so ease off and get it looked at quickly. The tire-pressure light means at least one tire is low; check and inflate before it wears or fails.
Don't Reset and Forget
Clearing a code without fixing the cause just delays the problem, and it can hide a fault that grows. When a light comes on, note whether it's steady or flashing, check the simple things like the gas cap and tire pressure, and get the codes scanned. Treating the dash as the early-warning system it is keeps small problems from becoming tow trucks.
