Every spec sheet lists horsepower and torque, and plenty of buyers nod along without knowing the difference. Understanding what each one measures explains why a big truck and a sports car feel so different even with similar power figures.

Torque Is Twisting Force

Torque is the rotational force the engine produces, measured in pound-feet. It's what you feel pressing you back into the seat when you accelerate, especially from low speeds. An engine that makes lots of torque low in the rev range feels strong and effortless off the line and is great for hauling, towing and relaxed driving. Diesel engines and large gas engines are known for abundant low-end torque.

Horsepower Is the Rate of Work

Horsepower is essentially how much work the engine can do over time, and it's derived from torque multiplied by engine speed. High horsepower, usually made higher in the rev range, translates into top-end speed and strong acceleration as the revs climb. A small engine that spins fast can make big horsepower without much torque, which is why some sporty cars need to be revved to feel quick.

How They Feel on the Road

Most enjoyable cars balance the two, and the shape of the power curve, where the torque and power arrive, often matters more than the headline numbers.
