Three years ago a used Tesla Model 3 or Chevy Bolt held its value like a stubborn pickup. That era is over. Used EV prices fell off a cliff through 2024 and 2025, and by mid-2026 you can find a clean three-year-old Model 3 for under $22,000 and a used Bolt for less than the price of a new compact sedan. On paper it looks like the bargain of the decade. The catch is that a used EV is really a used battery with a car wrapped around it, and the battery is the one part you cannot eyeball in a parking lot.

Gas-car shoppers learned over a century what to listen for: a knocking engine, a slipping transmission, the smell of burnt oil. None of that translates to an EV. A battery pack that has lost a fifth of its capacity drives exactly like a healthy one until the day you actually need the range and it isn't there. So the whole game of buying used has shifted. The question is no longer "how many miles" — it's "how much battery is left," and that takes a little homework.

State of health is the number that matters

Every EV battery degrades, and the metric for it is state of health, or SOH — the percentage of original capacity the pack can still hold. A new battery is 100%. A pack at 90% has lost a tenth of its range; at 80% it has lost a fifth, which on a car that started with 250 miles means you're now realistically working with around 200. That difference is the gap between a comfortable daily driver and a car you're nervous to take on a road trip.

The good news is that real-world degradation has been gentler than the early scare stories suggested. Recurrent, the battery-analytics firm that tracks tens of thousands of EVs, has found that most modern packs lose roughly 1% to 2% of capacity per year and that catastrophic failures are rare outside of a handful of known-bad model years. A well-treated five-year-old EV sitting at 88% to 92% SOH is completely normal and nothing to fear.

How to actually read the battery before you buy

You don't have to take the seller's word for it, and you shouldn't. There are three solid ways to get a real number:

  • On a Tesla, run the in-car range check or have the seller show you a recent service screen. Better still, plug in a $20 OBD-II dongle with an app like Scan My Tesla, which reads the pack's actual usable capacity rather than the optimistic dashboard estimate.
  • Pull a Recurrent report if the car has one — it's becoming the Carfax of battery health, and a growing number of dealers now include it. It shows SOH relative to comparable cars of the same age and model.
  • For everything else, an independent EV-savvy mechanic can run a diagnostic that reads SOH straight off the battery management system. It's worth the $100 to $150 the way a pre-purchase inspection always has been.

If a seller won't let you check the battery, walk away. That's not caution — that's the single most important data point on the car, and a refusal tells you everything.

The model years and quirks worth knowing

Not all used EVs are equal, and a few specifics save real money. The 2017–2019 Nissan LEAF is the classic trap: it used a passively air-cooled pack that degrades fast in hot climates, so a LEAF that lived its life in Phoenix or Houston can be down 30% while an identical one from Seattle is fine. The battery is the same; the climate did the damage. Buy a LEAF from a hot state at your own risk.

The Chevy Bolt is the opposite story with an asterisk. GM recalled and replaced the battery packs on 2017–2022 Bolts after a fire issue, which means a huge number of used Bolts on the market today are running a newer pack with a fresh warranty clock. That's a genuine bargain — if you confirm the replacement actually happened. Get the VIN, call a Chevy dealer, and verify the recall was completed. A Bolt with a replaced pack is one of the best value EVs you can buy right now; one that slipped through is a liability.

Don't forget the warranty that's still attached

Federal rules require EV batteries to carry an 8-year or 100,000-mile warranty, and that warranty transfers to you as the second owner. This is the safety net the gas-car world never had. A four-year-old EV with 45,000 miles still has roughly four years and 55,000 miles of battery coverage left, and most manufacturers will replace or repair a pack that drops below 70% SOH within that window.

Check the in-service date, not the model year — the clock starts when the car was first sold, which can be a year after it was built. A 2021 model first registered in 2022 carries warranty into 2030. That single fact can flip a borderline purchase into a confident one, because the most expensive thing that can go wrong is the one thing somebody else is still on the hook for.

The bottom line on used EV value in 2026

The depreciation that gutted EV resale values is, for a buyer, a gift. You are getting cars that cost $45,000 new for less than half that, with most of their battery life and a chunk of factory warranty still intact. The only way to lose is to skip the one check that matters and end up with a tired pack you'll pay $12,000 to replace out of pocket.

Verify the state of health, confirm the warranty transfers, and steer clear of hot-climate LEAFs and unverified Bolts. Do that and a used EV in 2026 is the cheapest reliable miles on the road — cheaper to fuel, cheaper to maintain, and now, finally, cheap to buy.
